FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an international charitable organization that is entirely run by volunteers. It hosts robotics events for students from age 6 all the way to the end of high school. One of these is the FIRST Robotics Competition for high school students, in which Arctos will be participating. Over a six-week build season, students design and build robots to perform tasks such as efficiently stacking as many boxes as possible or placing soccer balls in goals while travelling over, under, or through obstacles on a playing field. FIRST also teams up with technology companies and other organizations in order to provide tools, mentorship, and other resources which are used to build remarkable robots.
If successful, teams have the chance to advance to the FIRST Championship which is being held in St. Louis, Missouri in April 2016. These competitions promote teamwork and critical thinking, and prepare students for the ever expanding world of technology. Participants receive real-life experience in engineering and learn how to operate advanced equipment. Sponsors of FIRST and Arctos, the Bloor CI Robotics Team, support not only the growth of the technology industry, but also the next generation of engineers, scientists, and innovators.
